Abhinaya Dance Company, founded in 1980 in San Jose, has been dedicated to educating generations of dancers in the classical art form of Bharatanatyam and conducting performances on contemporary and traditional themes. Our mission is to propagate the cultural heritage of India through instruction and performances of Indian classical dance.
Our History
Founded by Artistic Director Mythili Kumar, Abhinaya has staged several full-length dance dramas choreographed by Mythili Kumar, featuring innovative and professional quality performances of South Indian classical dance forms. Since 2000, our shows have also featured the choreography of Guru C.V. Chandrasekhar, Rasika Kumar, Malavika Walia, and Anjana Dasu.
Our Services
Abhinaya offers a range of services, including:
- Dance School: We offer ongoing classes for students of all ages in San Jose and Monte Sereno, teaching the classical art form of Bharatanatyam.
- Performances: We conduct performances on contemporary and traditional themes, featuring innovative and professional quality dance dramas.
- Instructional Materials: We provide instructional materials, including videos and written guides, to help students learn and master the techniques of Bharatanatyam.
- Support: We rely on the support of our community, through donations, volunteering, and season pass holders, to continue our mission of promoting Indian classical dance.
Our Achievements
Abhinaya has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, California Arts Council, and City of San Jose, for its collaborations with musicians, Kathak and modern dance companies, Japanese Taiko drummers, and a Balinese ensemble. We have also appeared in several festivals, including the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival and Asian Performing Arts Festivals.
Our Legacy
Over the years, Abhinaya has built a legacy of excellence in Indian classical dance, with over 140 students graduating with their solo debut (Arangetram) performances. Our commitment to education, performance, and community outreach has made us a leading institution in the preservation and promotion of Indian classical dance.
