The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) is a non-profit organization that serves as the primary accrediting agency for physical therapy education programs and testing organization for physical therapy professionals. Our mission is to promote safe and competent physical therapy practice by developing and maintaining high-quality education and testing programs.

Our History

FSBPT was established in 1974 as a collaborative effort between state licensing authorities and the physical therapy profession. Over the years, we have grown to become the premier organization for physical therapy education and testing. Our organization is comprised of board members from various state licensing authorities, educators, and testing professionals who work together to advance the physical therapy profession.

As an organization, we are committed to promoting safe and competent physical therapy practice. We believe that by promoting professionalism, continuing competence, and licensure, we can ensure that the public receives the best possible care from physically therapy professionals. Our organization is structured to promote collaboration and communication between members, stakeholders, and the public. We have a board of directors, committees, and task forces that work together to achieve our mission.

Services

FSBPT offers a range of services aimed at promoting safe and competent physical therapy practice. These services include:

  • National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE): We develop, maintain, and administer the NPTE for physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs).
  • Continuing Competence Program: We provide guidelines and resources for physical therapists and assistants to maintain their continuing competence and professional development.
  • Model Practice Act for Physical Therapy: We developed the Model Practice Act for Physical Therapy, a tool used by jurisdictions to review and update their practice acts, rules, and regulations.
  • Licensure and Certification: We work with state licensing authorities to develop and implement licensure programs for physical therapists and assistants.
