Wake Up, Grow Up, and Make a Difference

At Crimson Gate, we are a sweet and intimate meditation community located in Oakland, California. Our emphasis is on contemporary Zen practice for modern lives, drawing on traditional Zen teachings as well as contemporary work in psychology, the sciences of complexity and ecosystems, the arts, poetry, philosophy, and social engagement. Our community is built on the principles of mutual care, shared inquiry, and a deep commitment to waking up and growing up.

Our Practice

Our practice is centered around Zazen meditation, which we practice in silence and stillness. We believe that this practice is essential for cultivating a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Through our meditation practice, we aim to create a community that is dedicated to deep inquiry into our lives and the timeless wisdom and compassion of the Buddhist tradition. We also offer Dharma Talks, which are open to donations, as well as other events and retreats throughout the year.

Our Community

Our community is connected not by ritual, dogma, or obligation, but by our aspiration and mutual care. We believe that our practice is not just about individual growth, but also about creating a more compassionate and awakened world. Through our shared inquiry and practice, we aim to cultivate a dynamic process of waking up and growing up, and to offer this realization to a troubled world.

Our Teacher

Our teacher, Megan Rundel, is a Ph. D. who has written extensively on the topics of Zen, psychology, and personal growth. Her teachings are rooted in her deep understanding of the Buddhist tradition, as well as her experience as a psychotherapist and scholar. Through her teachings, she offers a unique perspective on the intersection of Zen and modern life.

Our Offerings

We offer a variety of events and practices, including Monday Night Meditation, Day-Long Retreats, and Residential Retreats. We also have a selection of writings and teachings available on our website, including Dharma Talks and articles on topics such as Zen, psychology, and personal growth.
