Our Story
At Airfield Estates, we are proud to be a family-owned and operated winery and vineyard situated in the heart of the Yakima Valley, Washington State's oldest established AVA. With a rich history that dates back to 1907, we have a deep-rooted heritage that is deeply tied to the land and the community.
Aviation Heritage Timeline
Our family's love affair with the land began over a century ago when our founder, H. Lloyd Miller, pioneered to the northwest, settling in Sunnyside, Washington. As an entrepreneur and successful real estate man, H. Lloyd was largely engaged in the buying and selling of farm properties. By 1920, H. Lloyd had acquired the site where our estate vineyard is located today. At that time, the property did not have access to irrigation water. Over time, H. Lloyd became instrumental in bringing irrigation water to the higher regions of the Yakima Valley. He met directly with President Roosevelt and acquired the political support necessary to get the Roza Canal Project funded.
Wine Production
In 1967, our grandfather, Don Miller, became interested in growing wine grapes. He planted three different varietals, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The following spring, Don purchased additional grapevines and planted them on our estate vineyard. By 1971, our first commercial planting was established. Our father, Mike Miller, joined the family farm in 1974 and became highly involved in wine grape production. Today, our estate vineyard spans 830 acres and includes over 20 different varietals. We take great pride in our winemaking process, where every bottle of wine is carefully crafted to reflect the unique characteristics of our estate vineyard.
