Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a broadly defined category of iron alloys that contain from 12 to 30% Chromium and from 0 to 20% Nickel. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is attributed to a surface phenomenon known as passivity, which forms an invisible film when oxygen comes into contact with the surface. This film protects the underlying metal from rusting and corrosion under severe environments.

Stainless steels are divided into three general classifications:

• Austenitic: These are Chromium-Nickel type alloys that contain upwards of 8% Nickel. They are not hardenable by heat treatment, non-magnetic for practical purposes, and offer the greatest degree of corrosion resistance.
• Martensitic: These alloys contain from 12 to 20% Chromium and are magnetic and hardenable. Examples include Type 410 and 416.
• Ferritic: These are Chromium Stainless Steel alloys that are magnetic and not hardenable by heat treatment. Type 430 is an example.

Stainless steel is known for its high tensile strength, corrosion-resistant qualities, and ability to attain a mirror-like finish, making it one of the most versatile metals available.
