Pursuing Excellence in every bottle, every harvest
Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery is a pioneering winery that has been a stalwart of the Napa Valley wine industry since its founding in 1971. Our story began when Stuart Smith, along with his family, planted their vineyards on the slopes of Spring Mountain, St. Helena. Over the years, we have endeavored to create exceptional wines from our estate-grown grapes. Our journey has been marked by numerous accolades and recognition from the wine industry, including being named Winery of the Year in 2014 by The Daily Meal and winning the prestigious "Best Riesling" award in a field of international rieslings put on by Gault-Millau in 1979.
Our Winemaking Philosophy
At Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery, we are committed to producing wines that showcase the unique terroir of our estate vineyards. We believe in harnessing the natural conditions of our mountain slopes to create wines that are complex, nuanced, and ultimately reflect the essence of our vineyards.
As a pioneering dry-farmer, Stuart Smith has dedicated himself to the pursuit of excellence in viticulture and winemaking. Our vineyards are planted on the slopes of Spring Mountain, with a unique mixture of soils and geology that allows our grapes to thrive under the watchful eye of Mother Nature. Our winemaking team, led by Charles F. Smith III and Francois Bugue, utilizes traditional techniques combined with modern methods to craft wines that are both expressive of our terroir and pleasing to the palate.

Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery is proud of its rich history, which dates back to 1884 when George Cook granted a patent for the land that would eventually become our vineyards. We are honored to carry on this legacy and to contribute to the rich wine culture of the Napa Valley.
