Located in the heart of Napa Valley, our family-owned and operated winery has been perfecting the art of port production since 1979. Our story began when Jim Prager, a commercial casualty insurance broker, made the bold decision to follow his dream of becoming a winemaker in the Napa Valley. With the support of his wife Imogene and their seven children, Jim founded Prager Winery & Port Works, bringing his extensive knowledge of the port-making process to the region.
Our History
Prager Winery & Port Works has a rich history that spans over four decades. In 1977, Jim and Imogene Prager made the bold decision to move from Orange County, California, to St. Helena, where they founded the winery. The first crush took place in the historic carriage house on the property, which was once part of the John Thomann Winery and Distillery estate. The first releases included a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and the original Noble Companion Port. Over the years, our production has increased to almost 4,000 cases, with our second generation taking the reins to manage day-to-day activities.
Our Wines
At Prager Winery & Port Works, we take pride in crafting unique and award-winning wines. Our portfolio includes Vintage Port, Tawny Port, White Port, Petite Sirah, and Late Harvest Riesling. We also offer additional labels, such as our Royal Escort, Noble Companion, Aria, and Sweet Claire, which pay homage to the names of our grandchildren. Our family's commitment to quality and craftsmanship has earned us a reputation as a destination for lovers of world-class fortified wines.
