Empowering individuals through martial arts

Honshin Kan Martial Arts is a martial arts academy located in Santa Rosa, California, dedicated to the practice and teaching of Danzan Ryu Jujutsu, a traditional Japanese martial art that combines physical and mental discipline to develop the practitioner's overall well-being. Our primary goal is the personal development of our students, promoting fitness, health, confidence, focus, fortitude, peace of mind, and inner strength.

A Brief History of Danzan Ryu Jujutsu

Danzan Ryu Jujutsu is a complete and complex martial art system that was founded in the early 20th century by Professor Henry Seishiro Okazaki. This art combines a wide range of techniques from throwing and grappling to striking, joint locking, and submission holds. At its core, Danzan Ryu Jujutsu is a system of self-defense that emphasizes the importance of yielding circular movements, balance, and leverage over brute strength. This approach allows practitioners to develop a high level of physical fitness and mental clarity, allowing them to diffuse situations without resorting to violence.

Our Instructors

Our senior instructors are dedicated martial artists who have spent years studying and perfecting the art of Danzan Ryu Jujutsu. Sensei Mark Roberts, our school head, is a 5th-degree black belt who has been studying the art since 1994. Sensei Ken Gadbury, another senior instructor, has been studying the art since 1991 and has been teaching at Honshin Kan since 1996. Sensei Bob Lindberg, a Yondan (4th-degree black belt), has been studying the art since 1996 and has been teaching at Honshin Kan since 2000. Sensei Werner Armbrust, a Sandan (3rd-degree black belt), has been studying the art since 2005 and has been teaching at Honshin Kan since 2008.

Class Schedule

At Honshin Kan Martial Arts, we offer a variety of classes for adults and children, designed to foster personal development and physical fitness. Our classes are conducted in a safe and supportive environment, where students of all skill levels can learn and grow. Our adult classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, while our children's classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. We also offer a black belt class on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

What to Expect in Our Classes

During your first class, you can expect to begin working on Ukemi (rolling and falling) and being introduced to Yawara, the fundamental arts that serve as a foundation for the Danzan Ryu system. Ukemi develops the body's flexibility and prepares it for impact, while Yawara teaches the concept of Kuzushi, or breaking the opponent's balance. This sets the stage for the more advanced techniques that follow in the black belt curriculum.
