Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful - Keiko Fukuda, Judan

Soko Joshi Judo Club is a San Francisco based women's Judo club that was founded by Keiko Fukuda, the last surviving student of Dr. Kano, the founder of Judo. Fukuda Sensei, as she was affectionately called, was the highest ranking female Judoka in the world with a 10th Dan ranking. She was also the first woman to achieve the rank of 10th Dan in Judo history. Our club is proud to carry on her legacy by offering Judo classes and training programs for women of all ages and skill levels.

Our Sensei

At Soko Joshi Judo Club, all of our instructors and assistant instructors were directly trained by Master Keiko Fukuda. Our sensei emphasize proper form and technique, mental and spiritual focus, and life lessons such as perseverance, determination, and dedication. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students can learn and grow both physically and mentally. Our sensei are highly skilled and experienced Judoka who are committed to sharing their knowledge and passion for Judo with others.

Our Classes

We offer Women's Classes for all levels, including beginners and advanced students. Our classes are designed to improve technique, physical fitness, and mental focus. Proof of full vaccination status and face-mask are required to attend any class. Our Women's Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 8 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to Noon for advanced students. We welcome women of all ages and skill levels to observe a class and try out Judo for themselves.

In addition to our regular classes, we also offer Kata Tournaments and special events throughout the year. Our Kata Tournaments are open to all Judoka and feature all seven Kodokan kata. Our 31st Fukuda Kata Championship was held at City College of San Francisco in October 2019. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we were unable to hold the tournament in 2020 and 2021. However, we plan to resume the tournament in the future.

Our Philosophy

At Soko Joshi Judo Club, we believe in the philosophy of our founder, Keiko Fukuda, who believed in being strong, gentle, and beautiful in mind, body, and spirit. Fukuda Sensei's motto was Tsuyoku, Yasashiku, Utsukushiku - Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful. We strive to embody this philosophy in all that we do at our club, from our classes and training programs to our special events and tournaments.
