Welcome to the Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, a leading institution in progressive education for over a century. Founded in 1921, LREI is committed to providing an education that develops engaged, empathetic, and practiced citizens who actively participate in democracy. Our community is built on the principles of intentional equity and genuine engagement.

Our Principals' Blog: Learning at LREI

Our school's leadership is dedicated to cultivating a learning environment where students are inspired to ask meaningful questions and seek answers. Our principals' blog, Learning at LREI, is a reflection of our commitment to sharing insights, experiences, and ideas with our community and beyond.

Our Program: Lower School, Middle School, and High School

LREI offers a comprehensive Pre-K to 12th grade progressive education experience. Our program is designed to empower students to explore increasingly complex challenges, both intellectual and personal, local and global, philosophical and practical. We emphasize the importance of building skills and resolve to pursue real-world solutions.

_Lower School (Pre-K - Grade 4)_

In our Lower School, students engage in a dynamic and nurturing learning environment. We focus on nurturing a strong academic foundation, social-emotional growth, and creative expression.

_Middle School (Grades 5-8)_

At the Middle School level, students navigate the unique challenges and opportunities of adolescence through a supportive and challenging curriculum. Students build on their foundational skills, develop their critical thinking abilities, and engage in meaningful community service.

_High School (Grades 9-12)_

Our High School program prepares students for college and beyond by fostering independence, resilience, and leadership. Students participate in a rigorous academic program, enriching extracurricular activities, and engaging community service opportunities.

The Disciplines as Lenses

Our interdisciplinary approach encourages students to view the world through various lenses, including art, history, literature, mathematics, and science. This fosters a deeper understanding of complex issues by drawing connections across traditional subject boundaries.

Afterschool Program, Summers at LREI, and Faculty & Staff Life @ LREI

Our afterschool program extends the learning day and allows students to explore additional interests and passions. During the summer, we offer a wide variety of enriching programs and camps. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to providing an exceptional educational experience for all students, both within and beyond the classroom.

Our Community: Parents, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni

LREI is more than just a school; it is a diverse, vibrant community. Our community extends beyond the classroom to include parents, alumni, and local partners. Together, we strive to create an inclusive and equitable learning community where every student can thrive.

Giving to LREI

We rely on the generosity of our community to maintain and enhance our exceptional programming. There are many ways to support LREI, including annual giving, endowment gifts, and planned giving. We are deeply grateful for the support that enables us to continue our mission of providing a progressive education for all.
