Let go of old patterns and find a new groove
At our practice, we understand that each individual is unique and requires a personalized approach to therapy. As a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Christina Carter is dedicated to helping adults of all ages grow and change in ways that feel meaningful to them. Dr. Carter has extensive experience in treating specific disorders such as anorexia/bulimia/binge eating, addictions, OCD, generalized anxiety, depression, and ADD. However, she also works with more general issues like unstable self-esteem, relationship difficulties, perfectionism, procrastination, and parenting struggles.
Dr. Carter's approach is highly individualized and personalized, incorporating aspects of insight-oriented (psychodynamic), cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-oriented therapy methods. She is currently working towards completing the advanced level of Somatic Experiencing, which is a unique approach to treating nervous system dysregulation. This method increases your ability to manage stress in daily life and helps you work through past traumas that might be getting in your way.
Dr. Carter's practice has attracted individuals who may identify as "highly sensitive, " or those who were unusually bright, creative, or intuitive as children. This is perhaps not surprising given her location in New York City, widely known as a beacon for both achievement-driven folks as well as those who were born marching to the beat of their own drum.
Dr. Carter's primary goal as a therapist is to make her office a place where you feel comfortable, understood, and safe enough to take risks and go outside your comfort zone. She believes that the heart of good therapy is the personal, respectful, and authentic relationship built collaboratively in sessions.
Background
Dr. Carter grew up in the Dallas area and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated from UT's core liberal arts honors program, Plan II, in 1998. She completed majors in both Psychology and English Literature. As a lifelong voracious reader and learner, she is deeply interested in learning about her patient's worlds, including relational, intellectual, socio-political, and artistic dimensions of their life outside her office.
She moved to New York City in 1998 to attend New York University's clinical psychology program, where she received her PhD in 2006. She launched her private practice as a full-time venture in 2011. Dr. Carter has worked in a variety of treatment settings, including private clinic settings, acute psychiatric inpatient hospital work, and nursing homes.
