About Us
Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self-Defense Center is a world-renowned martial arts institution that has been empowering individuals and communities since 1980. Founded by Professor Coleen Gragen, the center is recognized nationally and internationally for its expert instruction and innovative programming. Our mission is to provide a supportive environment where individuals of all ages and skill levels can train in the eclectic art of Kajukenbo, a discipline that combines the best techniques and training methods from five traditional martial arts systems.
Our Martial Arts Program
At Hand to Hand, we offer traditional martial arts training and self-defense classes for adults of all genders. Our comprehensive program is designed to develop excellent body conditioning, power, balance, and fluidity of movement. Our training includes the study of basic techniques, traditional forms, fighting strategy, practical self-defense, and traditional weapons practice. We also offer specialized workshops and online programs for students of all levels.
Our Lineage
The art of Kajukenbo was created by combining the letters of the first few letters of each style: KA (Karate), JU (Judo and Jujitsu), KEN (Kenpo), and BO (Chinese boxing). Our lineage is rich in tradition and expertise, with instructors trained in the Gaylord Method of Ch'uan Fa Kajukenbo. We proudly acknowledge the contributions of our founders and esteemed instructors, including Professor Coleen Gragen, Grandmaster Charles Gaylord, and Grandmaster Barbara Bones.
