NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS) Explained

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive depression treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation. During a NeuroStar treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain's neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission possible.

Treatment with NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is easy and convenient. Therapy sessions are conducted in your NeuroStar doctor's office, and you can return to normal activities right away. You are awake during the treatment, and there are no negative effects on memory or sleep. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicare, and is typically administered five days a week for four to six weeks in-office.

How NeuroStar TMS Therapy Works

NeuroStar TMS Therapy sessions typically last between 19 and 37 minutes. During a session, you'll recline comfortably in the treatment chair while a small, curved magnetic coil is positioned lightly on your head. NeuroStar delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain, and you'll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head. After treatment, you can resume normal activities immediately.

Since the FDA clearance of TMS in 2008, insurance coverage for eligible patients has increased significantly. Currently, there are over 60 coverage policies for TMS, including most Medicare contractors. Although TMS is not a first line of treatment, it is an alternative option for those who are not responding to or cannot tolerate medications.
