For over 63 years, Grand Bakery has been a beloved institution in the Bay Area, serving the community with a wide range of delicious baked goods. From traditional Jewish treats like challah and hamentashen to sweet treats like cookies and cakes, our bakery has been a staple of Jewish culinary life in the Bay Area.
Our Story
Our journey began in 1959 when Ernie and Anne Hollander opened the New Yorker Bakery. In 2017, the bakery was at risk of disappearing with Bob Jaffe's retirement. New York-native Sam Tobis took over in order to ensure that Grand Bakery remains a staple of Jewish culinary life in the Bay Area. Today, we continue to serve the community with the same passion and dedication that has guided us since the beginning.

Our bakery is located in the Food Mill, a historic grocery store in Oakland's Laurel neighborhood. The Food Mill has been a staple of the community for over 80 years, and we are proud to be a part of its legacy. Our bakery is co-located above the Food Mill, which offers a wide range of natural and organic products.
