Helping Children and Families Heal and Grow

Welcome to the website of Dr. Rachel Robb Avery, a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience in providing individual and family therapy, psychological assessments, and school consultation services. As a seasoned professional, Dr. Avery has worked in various settings, including outpatient mental health centers, day treatment programs, child-residential programs, emergency room consulting, and private practice.

Who Am I?

As a licensed psychologist, I am committed to providing high-quality treatment and support to individuals and families in the Greater Portland area. I have extensive training in evidence-based intervention practices and have worked with children, adolescents, and adults using a range of approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, problem-focused therapy, relaxation training, and psychodynamic therapy.

What We Do

My practice offers a comprehensive range of services, including individual and family therapy, psychological assessments, and school consultation services. My approach is tailored to the unique needs of each patient, taking into consideration the complex interplay between biological, psychological, and environmental factors. I believe that understanding the fundamental nature of the problem is crucial in developing effective treatment strategies.

Treatment Modalities

My treatment approaches are person-problem specific, and I work closely with each patient to identify their distinct strengths and challenges. The goal of our work together is to empower individuals to develop skills, manage symptoms, and improve their overall well-being. I am trained in a variety of techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, problem-focused therapy, relaxation training, and psychodynamic therapy.

Family Therapy

In addition to individual therapy, I also offer family therapy services. This approach focuses on promoting communication, problem-solving, and emotional sharing within family units. I believe that effective communication and conflict resolution are essential for building strong, resilient family relationships.

Psychological Assessments

My practice also provides psychological assessments for children and adolescents. These assessments help identify developmental delays, learning disorders, and other conditions that may affect an individual's academic, social, or emotional functioning.

Partnership with Smart Thot LLC

In addition to my private practice, I am also the co-founder of Smart Thot LLC, a company dedicated to promoting emotional resilience in young children. Our flagship program, Think Smart Feel Good, is an evidence-based curriculum designed to teach children cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness skills.

Meet Thotso, Your Thoughtmaker

As part of our efforts to promote emotional health in children, I authored the children's self-help book "Meet Thotso, Your Thoughtmaker." This book introduces young children to the concept of positive thinking skills and provides parents and educators with a valuable tool for teaching emotional resilience.
