At Prelude, we believe in the power of fair trade and locally made goods. We believe that everyone should be fairly compensated for the work they do, and we're dedicated to creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers. Our store is more than just a place to shop; it's a platform for showcasing the talents of local New England artists and makers from around the world.

Our Story

Prelude was founded in April 1983 by Thom Lager, who initially sold bath products in the front of the store and jewelry in the back. In May 1989, Fa Vereen purchased Prelude and changed the configuration of the store, moving jewelry to the front to showcase it. Over the years, Prelude has had several owners, including Holly Landgarten, who owned the store for 17 years before selling it to our current owner, Brie Bray, in July 2015.

Brie has been a part of the local business community for over 10 years, previously owning Serendipity in Exeter. With her passion for organic farming and permaculture design, Brie has brought a new level of commitment to sustainability and fair trade practices to Prelude. Under her leadership, the store has been remodeled, and we've introduced many new, exciting, handmade, fair trade lines to our eclectic collection of products.
