Aikido of Arlington is a community dedicated to the practice and understanding of the art of Aikido, a traditional Japanese martial art centered around harmony and peace. Our path is guided by the principles of the founder, Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei), who embodied the essence of "the way of harmonizing with the spirit of the universe." We strive to create an environment where individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels can learn, grow, and connect through the practice of Aikido.
The Meaning Behind Aikido
The very name "Aikido" signifies its core philosophy. It is derived from the Japanese word components "ai, " "ki, " and "do." "Ai" encompasses the concepts of meeting, coming together, or harmonizing. "Ki, " meaning breath, energy, mind, spirit, or the universe's spirit itself, highlights the essential life force that flows through all things. Finally, "do" signifies the path or way, indicating the journey of self-development and refinement through the practice of Aikido.
Practice and Principles
Aikido emphasizes blending with an attacker's movement, redirecting their force, and ultimately achieving a peaceful resolution. Its practitioners cultivate a fluid, flexible style by coordinating movement with breath and harnessing balance as a foundation.
- Katame Waza and Nage Waza:
Aikido techniques fall into two broad categories. Katame waza encompasses joint locks and pins, applied through various holds and grappling techniques. Nage waza focuses on throws, utilizing the attacker's momentum against them while maintaining a calm and controlled stance.
- Atemi:
Strikes, or Atemi, are incorporated into Aikido techniques, serving to disrupt an attacker's balance or draw their attention. These strikes can be delivered with varying degrees of force, ranging from gentle distractions to more forceful techniques intended to cause discomfort or incapacitation.
- Ukemi:
Falling safely, known as ukemi, is a vital aspect of Aikido training. It provides a protective mechanism against potential injury during throws and grappling. This practice involves mastering specific rolling and breakfalling techniques designed to dissipate the force of impact and ensure a safe landing.
The Iwama-ryu Tradition
Aikido of Arlington adheres to the Iwama-ryu style of Aikido, established by O'Sensei and carried on by his devoted student, Morihiro Saito Sensei. Iwama-ryu places a strong emphasis on kihon training, fundamental exercises that form the bedrock of Aikido techniques. Students begin with static holds, cultivating awareness of angles, balance, and the integration of breath (kokyu) into movement. This foundation is crucial for developing the fluidity and harmony inherent in Iwama-ryu. The lineage of instruction ensures that the essence and spirit of O'Sensei's teachings continue to thrive within our community.
