At Boston Budo, we believe that traditional martial arts are an effective means to promote self-development and community building. With over 40 years of experience, our dojo has been dedicated to introducing students of all ages to the benefits of maintaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. By combining traditional methodology with a creative and innovative approach, we seek to bridge the gap between East and West.

Our martial arts philosophy is rooted in the principles of traditional Uechi Ryu Karate, a unique blend of Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan martial arts. Our expert instructors, led by Sensei Duane Lucia and Sensei Noah Lucia, have decades of combined experience and a deep understanding of the art. They have spent years honing their skills and developing a teaching style that is both challenging and rewarding.

Family Karate: A program designed for families to learn karate together, promoting a sense of unity and common purpose.

Savvy & Safe: Personal safety and self-defense workshops aimed at increasing awareness, problem-solving, and confidence in daily life.

Voices

Our students have spoken about their experiences at Boston Budo:

  • "Both my father and I have been studying with Sensei Duane for most of my life, and in my 30's, I'm more motivated now than ever. Our dojo has a diverse pedigree of teachers. Al Ford was a painter, Duane Lucia studied science and psychology, and his son Noah was a college athlete. That said, we cover a lot. I recommend Boston Budo to anyone, regardless of age or experience level." - Andrew W.
  • "This summer I had the unique opportunity to join my daughter and participate in karate lessons. Both of us had an amazing experience that included moments of laughter, endurance, challenge, excitement, and joy. Between classes, we found ourselves not only practicing the physical aspects of karate but also thinking about the ideas and concepts that were discussed in class, such as persistence, patience, and mind-body connection. Sensei Noah is a fantastic teacher, and we feel fortunate that our daughter joined his program!" - Liya K.
  • "I've studied with Sensei Duane Lucia since the early 1980s, and his son Noah since the early 2000s. Both of them are excellent instructors as well as martial artists. Their approach to teaching is all-encompassing, and my health, confidence, and fighting skills have all improved twentyfold. I can not recommend them highly enough." - Tony S.

Our History

At Boston Budo, we have a rich history dating back to 1979, when Sensei Duane Lucia founded the dojo. With combined years of experience, our instructors have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of martial arts excellence. We take pride in our family tradition, and our commitment to teaching and sharing our knowledge with others.

Chinese Martial Arts

Chinese martial arts have a long and storied history, dating back thousands of years. The early history of Asian martial arts is poorly recorded, but legend has it that a Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma traveled from the distant west to a Shaolin Temple in southeastern China, where he developed exercises like Sanchin to help other monks reach higher levels of healthfulness and spirituality. The Shaolin monks practiced these exercises, and in turn, created other forms and styles resembling the movement patterns of animals like the tiger, dragon, and crane.

Okinawa Te

Okinawa is a small island that lies between China and Japan. For centuries, it has been an important relay point for trade between these two countries, leading to the inevitable exchange of cultural ideas. Chinese martial arts were taught for many years in Okinawa and were combined with Okinawa-te, an ancient self-defense style indigenous to Okinawa. Even when the Japanese conquered Okinawa and banned the use of edged weapons and martial arts, the Okinawans continued to study in secret and develop their martial arts over the next 400 years.

Uechi Ryu Karate

Uechi Ryu Karate has its roots in Okinawa, where Kanbun Uechi studied Pangai-Noon for 13 years in China's Fujian Province. He later moved to Japan, where he taught until his death in 1942. His son, Kanei Uechi, opened a school in Nago, Okinawa, and continued the family tradition.
