Our Story
Whalebone Vineyard is a family-owned business located in Adelaide, California, in the Santa Lucia Mountain Range west of Paso Robles. Established in 1989, our 128-acre property is home to Angus cattle, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and a state-of-the-art winemaking facility. Our unique terroir, characterized by a perfect coastal climate, limestone and calcareous soils, and rocky south-facing hillsides, allows us to produce exceptional wines.
Our Vineyard
Our vineyard, named after the whalebones that were unearthed during the planting process, is situated at an elevation of 1,800 feet above sea level. The calcareous soils and rocky terrain create a perfect environment for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Our friend, noted cattleman Rex Swan, has an entire baby whale thorax and vertebrae intact in a rock now centered over his fireplace, which was used to create the graphic on the back label.
Our Winemaking Process
Our winemaking team, led by Handsome Dan Kleck, uses traditional methods to craft our wines. We employ sustainable viticulture practices, including shoot and fruit thinning, controlled leaf removal, and hand-tending to ensure the highest quality grapes. Our grapes are then carefully selected and fermented using a combination of traditional and modern techniques.
Our Wines
We offer a range of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon blends, Zinfandel, and Rose and Red Rhone blends. Our flagship wine, BOB WINE, is a cult favorite among wine enthusiasts. We also offer a selection of red wines, including our Whalebone Cabernet Sauvignon, which has received critical acclaim.
Our Tasting Barn
Our Tasting Barn, completed in 2007, offers a cozy and intimate setting for wine enthusiasts to taste our latest releases. The rustic interior, finished with reclaimed redwood, pine, mesquite, and copper, provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a wine flight or a glass of their favorite wine while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves.
Food and Picnicking
We welcome picnicking on our grounds, and visitors are invited to bring their own baskets or purchase local charcuterie items from our gift shop. We also offer a selection of local cheeses, crackers, and fresh fruits for purchase.
Pets and Children
We are a pet-friendly establishment, and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their owners on our grounds. We also offer on-site pet-sitting services for an additional fee. Children are welcome, and we offer a designated kid-friendly area with outdoor games and activities.
