Helping students achieve their academic goals, one student at a time.
Hello, I'm Matt Cohn, a full-time tutor with 15 years of experience in a wide variety of subjects. My mission is to help you achieve your goals, whether that means improving grades, raising test scores, or earning admission into best-fit colleges and universities. My wide-ranging experience includes two years of classroom teaching, and I have worked successfully with a diverse group of students and families around the Bay Area and beyond. I am the incoming President of the Bay Area Tutoring Summit (BATS), which provides ongoing professional development and peer review opportunities for private educators.
Education and Accolades
My education includes a B.A. with Honors in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma, where I competed on the nationally ranked golf team and received the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award along with Academic All-American honors. I also spent one year in a Counseling Psychology graduate program at Columbia University. Prior to my time at Oklahoma, I graduated from La Jolla High School in San Diego with a 4.4 GPA and was honored as a National Merit Scholar.
Expertise and Services
I specialize in SAT & ACT prep and have worked with students from nearly every high school in San Francisco and many others beyond. Among the services I provide are:
1. SAT & ACT Prep: I offer both individual and small-group tutoring for the SAT and ACT. I have 16 years of experience in SAT & ACT prep and have worked with students from nearly every high school in San Francisco and beyond. Most of my students attend schools like S.I., Lick, University, Urban, SHC, and Lowell. I help students navigate the unique challenges of SAT & ACT testing, including the upcoming transition to a digital, computer-adaptive SAT.
2. College Counseling: I work with students and families to find best-fit colleges and universities. This includes helping students identify their strengths, interests, and goals, as well as providing guidance on the application and financial aid processes.
3. Academic Tutoring: I offer tutoring in a wide variety of subjects, including mathematics, science, and humanities. My experience includes two years of classroom teaching in Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry and AP Psychology.
The Benefits of Individualized Tutoring
While I do offer small-group tutoring, I find that many students benefit from individualized, one-on-one tutoring. This approach allows for a personalized learning experience tailored to the student's unique needs, strengths, and goals. In a one-on-one setting, students often feel more comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring new concepts without the pressure of keeping up with classmates.
Outside of Work
When I'm not working or competing in golf tournaments, I enjoy cooking and spending quality time with my two adorable cats, Marge and Linda.
