Transforming Outdoor Spaces, One Lawn at a Time
Our History
Founded in 1961, Louisiana Karate Association (LKA) stands as the oldest karate school in the state, boasting a rich history of tradition and excellence. From its inception, LKA has been dedicated to fostering personal development through the time-honored methods of traditional Shotokan karate training. Led by the distinguished Sensei Takayuki Mikami, a 9th dan black belt and former student of the legendary Master Gichin Funakoshi, LKA has consistently cultivated a reputation for providing high-quality instruction and nurturing a strong sense of community.
In March of 1965, Sensei Mikami, a graduate of the Japan Karate Association Instructor Training Program, took the helm of LKA, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. Under his guidance, LKA has evolved into a leading institution for karate training in the Southern United States. Sensei Mikami's commitment to passing on the true essence of Shotokan karate has ensured that LKA maintains its strong connection to the original lineage of the art.
Starting with a group of dedicated students in the New Orleans area, LKA has welcomed individuals of all ages and backgrounds over the years. The club has been instrumental in introducing karate to generations of students, igniting a passion for martial arts and self-improvement. LKA's reputation for producing accomplished karateka has grown throughout the years, with numerous national champions and U.S. team members hailing from its ranks. Sensei Mikami's legacy extends beyond individual accomplishments; he has strived to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students can develop not only their physical skills but also their mental discipline, confidence, and character.
Our Approach to Training
At LKA, we believe in a holistic approach to karate training. Our instructors, all highly trained individuals with a deep understanding of Shotokan principles, are dedicated to providing personalized attention and guidance to students of all levels. We emphasize the development of fundamental techniques, culminating in a strong foundation for more advanced training.
Our curriculum is grounded in the three core elements of Shotokan karate: kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Ki hon focuses on perfecting fundamental movements, such as punches, blocks, and stances, while kata are intricate sequences of movements that simulate real-life combat scenarios. Kumite, involving controlled sparring sessions, allows students to apply their techniques in a safe and structured environment.
LKA's commitment to fostering personal growth extends beyond physical training. We believe that karate is more than just a martial art; it is a journey of self-discovery and personal development. Through discipline, perseverance, and respect, students learn valuable life lessons that can be applied both on and off the mat.
Shotokan Karate
Shotokan karate is a dynamic and powerful style known for its emphasis on strong body techniques and full-power strikes. It was developed by Master Gichin Funakoshi in the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from traditional Okinawan karate methods. LKA is proud to be a direct lineage school of Shotokan karate, tracing its roots back to Master Funakoshi and his top students, Mr. Nakayama and Mr. Nishiyama.
Sensei Mikami's extensive training under these masters has ensure LKA offers authentic and traditional Shotokan karate instruction. Our approach seeks to instill in students not only the physical techniques but also the underlying philosophy of respect, discipline, and self-control.
