At the Sports Medicine Institute (SMI), we are dedicated to helping active individuals and athletes of all abilities maximize their potential and function at the highest level possible. As a public benefit nonprofit corporation, we strive to prevent and treat overuse injuries, optimize human function, and enhance athletic performance through education, research, and clinical services.

Our Story

SMI was established in 1997 as a cooperative effort between therapists, physicians, researchers, athletes, and coaches. Together, we developed unique soft tissue therapies to prevent injury and dysfunction, expedite recovery from occupational and athletic injuries, and enhance athletic performance. Over the past 25 years, SMI has evolved from a single-location massage clinic to a comprehensive performance center, offering a range of services designed to support active lifestyles.

Our Services

At SMI, we offer a range of services designed to support active individuals and athletes. Our expert therapists use a variety of techniques, including Orthopedic Massage, Active Release Techniques (ART), Dry Needling, Acupuncture, and Personal Training to help clients achieve their goals. Whether you're looking to recover from an injury, prepare for a competition, or simply maintain optimal physical function, we have a team of experienced professionals dedicated to helping you succeed.

Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic Massage (OM) is a type of manual therapy that focuses on the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain. Our OM therapists use a combination of techniques, including deep tissue sports massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, neural mobilization, and assisted stretching, to increase range of motion, decrease and manage pain, and restore normal body movement and function.

Expertise

All SMI therapists are certified with the California Massage Therapy Council and receive ongoing training at SMI to ensure the highest level of quality and care. Our expert therapists have a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics, allowing them to develop personalized treatment plans that address the unique needs of each client.

Community

At SMI, we believe in the importance of community and partnership. We work closely with local organizations and businesses, including Agile Physical Therapy, Asha for Education, and the Bay Area Track Club, to support the health and well-being of athletes and active individuals in our community.
