The Dojo, a martial arts school in Los Angeles, has been a hub for martial arts training for over 40 years. Founded by the late Robert Bryner Sensei in 1984, The Dojo has continued to thrive under the guidance of his widow, Chikako Bryner Sensei. Our school offers three distinct martial arts disciplines: Aikido, Iaido, and Ryu Te.

Aikido

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasizes harmony and balance. Developed by Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido focuses on the principles of non-resistance and centerline. Our style of Aikido is Hombu Aikido, led by Shihan, Shoji Nishio Sensei (8th dan Aikido, 7th dan Iaido, 6th dan Judo, 5th dan Karate). We offer classes in Aikido, focusing on the traditional techniques and philosophies of the art.

Iaido

Iaido is the art of drawing a Japanese sword, known as a katana. Our unique approach to Iaido, Aikido Toho Iai, focuses on the precise and fluid movement of the draw, cut, and sheathing of the sword. Our style is developed by Shoji Nishio Shihan and is a harmonious blend of Aikido and the art of Iaido.

Ryu Te

Ryute is a traditional form of karate from the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) developed by Taika Seiyu Oyata. Ryu Te emphasizes self-defense through the application of the Protection Arts, which include the prudent use of pressure point strikes, joint locking, and the exploitation of the body's natural weak points.
