Services Offered

*Gifted Testing*: Dr. Elman offers gifted testing to identify intellectual giftedness in children. She understands the importance of accurately identifying gifted children so that they can receive the appropriate educational opportunities and support. The testing session usually lasts between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the age of the student.

*Learning Disability Evaluations*: Dr. Elman conducts neuropsychological evaluations to diagnose learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and attention deficit (ADHD). These evaluations are tailored to the individual needs of the examinee and use the most up-to-date assessment measures. The evaluation process may take place over the course of three or more days, depending on the specific needs of the child.

*SAT/Standardized Test Accommodations*: Dr. Elman evaluates students to determine whether they qualify for testing accommodations on college and graduate exams, such as the ACT, SAT, MCAT, GRE, and LSAT.

*Additional Services*: In addition to the above services, Dr. Elman also offers assessments in the areas of intellectual ability (IQ), academic achievement, social/emotional adjustment, and various cognitive processes, including executive functioning, memory, attention, auditory processing, and phonological awareness.

The Evaluation Process

Scheduling the Evaluation: To schedule an evaluation, please call Dr. Elman to discuss the process and to find a suitable time for the evaluation. Parents are encouraged to schedule evaluations in the morning, when children are usually at their sharpest and most attentive.

Discussing the Evaluation with your Child: Dr. Elman encourages parents to present the evaluation as a series of activities that will help teachers understand the best way to teach the child. She never wants a child to feel under pressure to perform, particularly for gifted testing.

The Day of the Evaluation: For gifted testing, the testing session usually lasts between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the age of the student. Testing for other evaluations, which are more extensive, will likely take place over the course of three or more days. Dr. Elman never pushes a child to continue with testing if he/she begins to appear tired or starts to lose focus. She always strives to make the testing process enjoyable and often hears from kids that it was fun.

About Dr. Rebecca Elman

Dr. Elman is a Florida Licensed Psychologist and an experienced educator. She began her career in education as a teacher in the Teach for America program in Baltimore, Maryland. Later, upon earning her doctorate, Dr. Elman worked as a school psychologist in the Broward County school system, where she gained invaluable knowledge of the inner workings of the school system and the various eligibilities and services available to students. Dr. Elman entered private practice in 2001, practicing primarily in the field of educational assessment and diagnosis (giftedness, learning disabilities and ADHD) and the determination of eligibility for services under applicable State and County standards. Dr. Elman has taught as an adjunct professor in the graduate School Psychology departments at Barry University and NOVA Southeastern University. Dr. Elman is a consultant to a private school in Miami, where she assists school personnel in determining the appropriate interventions and accommodations to ensure their students' success.
