At Chang's Hapkido Academy, we are dedicated to teaching traditional martial arts training in London, UK. Our school has been a part of the community since 1993, providing a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Our Approach

Our approach to martial arts training is unique and distinctive. We focus on personal growth and improvement, rather than street fighting. We believe that everyone is different, and that everyone can develop. We also believe that making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process. Our Master, Tammy Parlour MBE, is passionate about creating a climate that emphasizes personal development and improvement.

What is Hapkido?

Hapkido is a Korean martial art that is suitable for all ages and abilities. It is an easy-to-learn, complete art that teaches a range of techniques, including kicks, punches, pressure point techniques, throws, joint locks, weapons training, and meditation. Unlike many martial arts, Hapkido is a complete system that emphasizes self-discipline and personal development.

Unique Philosophy

Chang's Hapkido Academy is built on a set of core principles that guide our training and philosophy. These principles are WON, HWA, and YEW, which stand for Circular Motion, Harmony, and Water, respectively.

WON (Circular Motion)

The circular principle is a key aspect of Hapkido, as it allows us to deflect or redirect the force of an attacker's punch, rather than meeting force with force. This principle is not only applicable to a physical defense scenario but can also be applied to everyday life, where we can respond to negative comments with positive ones.

HWA (Harmony)

Harmony is a fundamental concept that guides our training and daily lives. We aim to cultivate a sense of harmony within ourselves, between our mind and body, and with our environment and opponents. This principle reminds us that our ultimate goal is to be in harmony with the world around us.

YEW (The Water Principle)

The water principle is a cornerstone of our training, emphasizing the importance of softness, adaptability, and flexibility. Water's ability to soften and mold to its surroundings is a metaphor for our approach to martial arts, where we seek to flow and adapt rather than resisting or opposing force.
