Your Trusted Dance School in San Francisco
Steppin' Out Dance Studio has been nurturing young dancers since 1995, building on the legacy of the historic Betty May Dance Studios that served San Francisco's Mission District since the 1930s. Founded by Angela Rose Dorantes and Avilee Goodwin, we continue Betty May's tradition while expanding into modern dance forms like hip hop, contemporary, and creative movement. Our mission is to provide children and young adults with a supportive environment to develop technical skills, self-esteem, and performance experience through dance. With over 25 years of experience, we offer structured classes in tap, ballet, jazz, tumbling, contemporary, and danceABILITY for ages 3-18.Our faculty includes professional dancers and educators with extensive performance and teaching credentials. We emphasize individual growth through age-appropriate classes that challenge students at every skill level. Our annual performance gives students the opportunity to showcase their progress on stage. Located in San Francisco, we serve families across the Bay Area with two semesters of instruction and special programs like summer camp. Our commitment to community and dance education has earned us recognition as a San Francisco Legacy Business. We maintain small class sizes and personalized attention to ensure each dancer receives the support they need to thrive.

Tap Dance
Our tap dance classes develop rhythm, coordination, and musicality through progressive techniques. Students learn classic steps and modern combinations that build from basic sounds to complex patterns. Classes emphasize clear articulation and improvisation skills while preparing dancers for performance opportunities.
Ballet
Ballet instruction focuses on proper technique, posture, and graceful movement. Classes follow a structured progression from basic positions to advanced pointe work. Our curriculum develops strength, flexibility, and artistry while preparing students for both classical and contemporary repertoire.
Contemporary Dance
Contemporary classes explore movement through momentum, alignment, and spatial awareness. Students develop expressive qualities while learning choreography that emphasizes individuality and creativity. Classes incorporate improvisation and composition techniques for dancers with prior experience.
Creative Movement
Designed for our youngest dancers, creative movement classes use play-based learning to develop motor skills and musicality. Children explore basic dance concepts through imaginative activities that prepare them for formal technique training in later years.
