Our bread: it's not just a loaf, it's a legacy

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco since 1849, Boudin Bakery carries on a rich tradition of baking world-renowned sourdough bread. From humble beginnings as a single bakery to a beloved local institution, our story is entwined with the very soul of the city.

Our Humble Beginnings

Isidore Boudin, a skilled French baker with a visionary's spirit, arrived in San Francisco during the Gold Rush and revolutionized local breadmaking. Combining traditional French baking techniques with the unique tang of sourdough derived from the area's coastal fog, he crafted the distinctive sourdough French bread that became synonymous with the city.

Generations of Bakers and Bread-Lovers

Louise Boudin, Isidore's wife, took the helm after his passing in 1887, showing remarkable business acumen and perseverance through challenges like the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire. Her dedication ensured that the cherished sourdough tradition lived on.

A Master Baker Guides the Future

Joining the bakery in 1935, Stefano Giraudo, known as "Papa Steve, " became head baker and poured his heart and expertise into preserving the unique flavor and quality of Boudin bread for over six decades. His immense contribution continues to inspire and guide our bakers today.

A Legacy of Sourdough and Community

Over the generations, Boudin Bakery has cultivated a loyal following for its delectable sourdough bread and other culinary delights. We take pride in offering exceptional quality, fresh ingredients, and warm hospitality, making it a cherished gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Our Commitment

At Boudin Bakery, we are dedicated to upholding the legacy of our founders by crafting exceptional sourdough bread, offering exceptional customer service, and contributing to the vibrant San Francisco community. We believe in preserving tradition while exploring innovative flavors and techniques, ensuring that the taste of Boudin bread remains forever extraordinary.
