Mastering the art of wood-fired ceramics, one piece at a time
At Big Table Studios, we are committed to creating high-quality, functional, and sculptural wood-fired ceramics. Our mission is to master the ancient technology of firing clay with wood, while incorporating local materials into our work. Located in the picturesque Missouri River Valley, our studio is inspired by the natural world and rich in resources. We are dedicated to preserving traditional techniques while exploring contemporary approaches to functional design and sculptural art.
The Kiln
Our kiln, built in 2005, is an anagama style wood-burning kiln with a capacity of 250 cubic feet. Each firing is a two-week process, involving loading, firing, and cooling. We burn about four cords of wood per firing, sourced from dead fall on our property and local arborist businesses. This process creates unique effects on each clay piece, making every item one-of-a-kind. We fire without glaze, allowing the natural coloration to develop during the loading and firing process. The results range from subtle to dramatic, making the unloading of the kiln an exciting experience.
Values
At Big Table Studios, we value the use of local materials, the preservation of traditional techniques, and the exploration of contemporary design. We believe that the process of creating ceramics should be a celebration of nature and human ingenuity. Our commitment to these values results in unique, functional, and beautiful pieces that reflect our connection to the natural world.
