The School for Strings, founded in 1970 by Louise Behrend, is a premiere Suzuki-based music school in New York, dedicated to providing comprehensive instrumental instruction in violin, cello, and piano to students of all ages and skill levels. Our mission is to create a nurturing environment that fosters musical growth, creativity, and excellence, while instilling a lifelong appreciation for music.

At The School for Strings, we believe that every child is born with the potential to master the language of music, given proper environment, nurturing, and expert teaching. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive music education that develops the whole child, fostering intellectual, emotional, and social growth. We strive to create a community of musicians, teachers, and parents working together to inspire a lifelong love of music and learning.

Our Programs

The School for Strings offers a range of programs designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our Instrumental Programs include private lessons, group classes, music theory, orchestra, and ensemble classes, as well as a special Parent Class for beginners. Our Teacher Training Program offers Suzuki-based pedagogy seminars in violin, cello, and piano, providing comprehensive training for aspiring music educators. Our Early Childhood Program introduces children to instruments, rhythmic games, and movement, preparing them for future instrumental study. Our Start Up Program offers an opportunity for in-depth introductory study in violin, cello, or piano at a nominal cost.
