Empowering Young Minds through Curiosity and Creativity
At Palisades Preschool, we believe that children learn best when they are encouraged to explore, create, and learn at their own pace. Our school is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which emphasizes the importance of self-directed learning and exploration. We strive to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, and fun for all children.
Our Philosophy
We believe that children learn by exploring and experiencing, by asking and discussing, and by reflecting upon and revisiting their experiences. This growth and learning process takes place with the support of caring adults and peers and within the context of a rich and interconnected system of child, family, and community.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to support children's natural curiosity and love of learning. We believe that play is the best way for children to learn and develop important skills. Our playground is an extension of our classrooms, providing children with opportunities to explore, imagine, and learn through play. Our teachers are trained to facilitate this learning process, providing support and guidance when needed.
Our Ateliers
Our school is made up of numerous small spaces, which we have transformed into individual ateliers. These ateliers provide children with opportunities to explore and learn through different activities and materials. Some of our ateliers include:
- The Atelier of Living Organisms: Where children can explore and learn about the natural world.
- The Atelier of Taste: Where children can explore and learn about different textures and tastes.
- The Workshop: Where children can engage in hands-on projects and activities.
- The Outdoor Studio: Where children can learn and have fun in a natural outdoor setting.
- The Studio of Construction: Where children can build and create using various materials.
Our Structure
We have one morning schedule, and all children attend school at the same time. Our teachers are able to plan, prepare environments, and work on documentation after children depart. Our regular days begin between 8:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and children are dismissed between 12:00 p.m. and 1:40 p.m., Monday to Thursday. We are closed for the month of July.
Meals and Snacks
We believe that mealtimes are an important part of the learning process. Our catered lunch is prepared by a local chef in a commercial kitchen. Children take turns to prepare the tables with care, leaving a sense of welcome for all their friends. A simple breakfast snack and a healthy mid-morning snack are offered daily.
Family Participation
We believe that families are an integral part of the learning process. Parent participation in the education process is central to our philosophy of early childhood education. We encourage families to participate in various aspects of our school community, such as serving on committees, volunteering in the classroom, and attending events.
Our History
Palisades Preschool was founded in the summer of 1999 when a group of dedicated parents joined a director and a teaching staff they believed in and set out to open a new school. Now, as a part of the Santa Monica Palisades, the preschool is housed within St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Lincoln Blvd. and is celebrating its 25th year at this site.
Excellent Experience
This preschool has received glowing reviews from parents who have had their children enrolled. Author Hpm J. raved about the loving and thoughtful educational environment, praising the warmth of the teachers and the community. They noted the high teacher ratios, beautiful yard, and creative activities such as art and music classes. The author's children are thriving in this environment.
Positives Continued
The author appreciated the dedicated art and music teachers, the kitchen where children make and taste new foods, and the supportive environment that fosters social and emotional development.
Excellent Staff
Author Oliver Cornell also had a wonderful experience at this preschool. His son developed great empathy and self-confidence, and built a solid foundation for his future educational journey. Oliver appreciated the high-quality art materials and projects, as well as the guidance of passionate educators who were inspired by Reggio education.
Concerns
However, Disappointed Parent had a different experience. They felt that their child was behind in reading and writing skills despite paying a high fee for half-day care. They criticized the alternative teaching approach, stating that it would not prepare their child for future learning.
