Joan Robertson, the founder of Tutoring Advantage, is a licensed teacher with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and a math emphasis from Bemidji State University. She has completed coursework in all four levels of the Orton-Gillingham Method through the Upper Midwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota, and Hamline University. Joan has a wealth of experience working with students with special education needs, having worked as a special education kindergarten teacher, reading and math tutor, academic therapist, and private practitioner.

Services Offered

At Tutoring Advantage, we offer a range of services designed to help students with learning disabilities succeed. Our services include:

• Orton-Gillingham Based Reading and Spelling Tutoring: Our flagship program uses a research-based methodology that has been proven to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills in people with dyslexia. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions focus on reading fluency and comprehension, using the Orton-Gillingham approach.
• Math Tutoring: We offer one-on-one math tutoring for kindergarten through 6th grade students. Our experienced tutors use a variety of methods and materials to help students build mathematical skills and confidence.
• Study Skills Tutoring: Our study skills tutoring is designed to help 3rd through 12th grade students develop the skills they need to succeed in school. We cover topics such as time management, organization, note-taking, and test-taking strategies.
• Writing Skills Tutoring: We offer writing skills tutoring for students of all ages. Our tutors use a variety of methods and materials to help students build their writing skills, including the Kansas Writing Strategies and Handwriting Without Tears programs.

Our Approach

At Tutoring Advantage, we believe that every student is unique and deserves a personalized approach to learning. We take the time to get to know each student, their learning style, and their strengths and weaknesses. We then develop a customized plan that focuses on their specific needs.

Our tutoring sessions are scheduled at least once a week and last 50 minutes. We offer both in-person and webcast tutoring, using both Skype and Realtime Board for online tutoring. We believe that regular tutoring sessions are key to student progress, and we offer flexible scheduling to accommodate busy families.
