City Ballet of Los Angeles

Founded by Robyn Gardenhire, a former dancer with American Ballet Theater and other prestigious companies, City Ballet of Los Angeles (CBLA) was established to democratize access to dance education for economically and socially disadvantaged communities. Our mission is to reflect the economic and racial diversity of Los Angeles through professional dance training, community outreach, and performance opportunities. We offer programs like the Emerging Artist Program and Open School, catering to students aged 3 to 16 with classes in ballet, modern, pointe, and yoga, all rooted in the Vaganova Method with American influences. Our faculty includes certified instructors like Yuka Fukuda, a former member of Ailey II, and Daniella Escamilla, a CBLA alumna who now leads youth programs. We prioritize inclusivity, providing scholarships and life lessons through dance, and have partnered with schools across Los Angeles to deliver workshops and performances.

Our board members, including journalist Gary Taubes and executive director Irene Lewis, support our vision of building a new generation of artists. CBLAs theatrical productions, such as *The Nutcracker Swings*, blend classical and contemporary influences, reflecting our commitment to innovation. We emphasize anatomical precision in modern classes using the Horton Technique and collaborate with artists like actor Sloan Robinson and photographer Julie Hopkins. With over two decades of experience, we ensure every student, regardless of background, thrives in a nurturing environment that values discipline, creativity, and community impact.
