Building community. Nurturing nature. Empowering action.

At the Civic Garden Center, we believe that everyone deserves access to healthy food, a connection to nature, and a sense of community. For over 75 years, we've been teaching people how to grow their own food, care for the environment, and build strong relationships with their neighbors. Our mission is to build community through gardening, education, and environmental stewardship.

Our History

Founded in 1942 during the Victory Gardens movement, we've been a regionally recognized nonprofit model for gardening, sustainability, and horticulture in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our historic estate, formerly owned by philanthropist Cornelius J. Hauck, provides a unique setting for our community to grow, learn, and thrive.

What We Do

Our work spans three broad areas: Grow, Nurture, and Connect.

  • Grow: We support individuals and communities in growing their own food, whether it's in a backyard, community garden, or even a pot on a windowsill. Our programs and resources help gardeners of all levels develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Nurture: We believe that ecology is about interconnectedness. We explore the relationships between plants, animals, and the environment, and work together to protect Earth's resources for future generations.
  • Connect: Our community is built on diversity, accessibility, and a commitment to healthy, environmentally responsible living. We provide opportunities for people to learn, volunteer, and connect with others who share their passions.

Our Programs

Our program areas focus on helping people grow food, nurture ecology, and build community. We offer a mix of hands-on classes, certifications, volunteer opportunities, and special events. From gardening and sustainability to cooking and environmental education, we have something for everyone.
