The hotel's rich history dates back to the California Gold Rush era, when Dr. Lewis C. Gunn, a native Philadelphian, settled in Sonora to seek his fortune in the gold mines. Despite failing as a gold prospector, Dr. Gunn recognized the area's vast beauty and potential, and he built the area's first two-story adobe building as his home and place of business. In the early 1850s, he started the Mother Lode's first newspaper, The Sonora Herald.
