Types of Glass

We work with a variety of glass materials for our commercial and residential products. Two of the most common types of glass we use are flat glass and plexiglass.

Flat Glass

Flat glass is the foundation for many of the products we see and use every day, such as windows, glass doors, transparent walls, and windshields. This type of glass is manufactured in sheets and can be bent after production for specific architectural or automotive applications. Depending on the manufacturing process, flat glass comes in various forms, including oat glass, sheet glass, or rolled glass. Most flat glass is produced using the oat process, resulting in annealed glass, which is the basic at glass product. This material can be further processed to create more advanced products like laminated glass, toughened/tempered glass, coated glass, and more.

Plexiglass

Plexiglass, also known as acrylic, is a solid, transparent plastic made from polymethyl methacrylate. This material has thermoplastic properties, allowing it to be bent and shaped into various forms. Plexiglass is easier to handle and cut compared to glass and is considered shatter-resistant. It requires significantly more pressure to crack than glass and doesn't shatter into dangerous pieces, making it ideal for areas where children play, police shields, and basketball backboards. Plexiglass allows more than 90% of sunlight and about 80% of shaded light to pass through, making it the clearest material available. It's lightweight, durable, and can be applied with UV coatings for protection and color tints. Plexiglass is often used as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass in various fields, including vehicle rear-lights and instrument clusters, appliances, lenses for glasses, and artistic/architectural projects.
