National JACL Credit Union is a proudly community-focused financial institution that has been serving the community for over 75 years. Founded in 1943 by Japanese Americans, our credit union was originally sponsored and chartered by members of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). The JACL is the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization in the United States, dedicated to promoting the civil and human rights of all Americans, with a special emphasis on the Asian Pacific American community.
Our History
Our history begins in the aftermath of World War II, when the JACL recognized the need to help Japanese Americans rebuild their lives after years of internment and dislocation. Many Japanese Americans had lost everything, from their belongings to their businesses and properties. Prejudice and discrimination were rampant, making it difficult for them to find employment or access financial institutions. Hito Okada, a determined individual, researched the concept of cooperatives and decided to form a credit union to help fellow Japanese Americans. The National JACL Credit Union was born, with the goal of providing financial assistance and support to the Japanese American community.
