The Florida Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association (FLAHIGA) is a statutory entity established in 1979 by the Florida legislature. As a guaranty association, FLAHIGA is responsible for protecting the policyholders of member insurers in the event that they become insolvent.
Our Mission
FLAHIGA is committed to providing a safety net for Florida policyholders by ensuring that their insurance policy obligations are fulfilled. We accomplish this by taking on the policy obligations of the insolvent insurer, including collecting premiums, paying valid claims, and continuing coverage as long as possible.
How We Operate
When a member insurer becomes insolvent, a receiver is appointed by the court to wind up the company. FLAHIGA automatically becomes liable for the policy obligations owed to its Florida policyholders. We receive the policy records and history from the liquidator, collect premiums, administer the policies, and pay all valid claims. We may also transfer policies to a new, stable insurer with approval from the state.
Our Services
As a guaranty association, FLAHIGA provides a range of services to policyholders, including:
- Collecting premiums and paying valid claims
- Continuing coverage as long as possible
- Providing payments if a policyholder surrenders a policy
- Working to find another sound insurance company to take over the policies
Our Board of Directors
FLAHIGA is governed by an eleven-member board of directors, comprising representatives from the insurance industry and the state of Florida. Our board is responsible for ensuring that FLAHIGA operates effectively and efficiently in fulfilling its mission.
