Our History

In 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression, Joseph and Frances Siwek started what is now Siwek Lumber & Millwork, Inc. With a young baby, Joe Jr., they faced the unimaginable challenge of starting a new business in a time when unemployment peaked at nearly 25%. Joe, Sr., who was laid off from his job at the railroad, began the business by dismantling retired wooden boxcars, packaging the scraps, and selling them as heating firewood. They also sold loose coal along the rail lines to families desperate to heat their homes. Despite the tough times, the Siwek family's determination and work ethic led to the birth of their business.

After World War II, the business adapted to the changing market as new homes were built, and coal and firewood were replaced by natural gas. Siwek Lumber started selling lumber, plywood, and insulation to homeowners, helping them finish basements, add garages, and build cabins. In 1947, Siwek Fuel and Lumber was incorporated and moved to its current headquarters on Marshall St NE in NE Minneapolis.

Joe Jr. and Judy Siwek took over the business in the 1950s and 1960s, ushering in a new era of prosperity for Siwek Lumber. As the neighborhood grew and new businesses emerged, Siwek Lumber continued to provide excellent service and high-quality products to its customers.
