Horizon High School

Horizon High School is a unique institution dedicated to supporting high school students in recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) and those at increased risk of SUD. Located in Dane County, Wisconsin, we are the only recovery high school in the state. Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive community, an academic and therapeutic environment, and foster emotional, social, and academic growth for our students. We believe in the importance of a student-centered learning environment with a low student-to-teacher and counselor ratio of 5:1 to ensure each student receives the individualized attention they need. Our programs are designed to promote accountability, honesty, and mutual respect among students, and we encourage participation in various activities both in and out of school to maintain recovery and personal growth. Since our inception, over 200 young people have attended Horizon, and many of our alumni are now successfully enrolled in colleges and universities, serving in the military, or contributing members of our community.

Services Offered

Horizon High School offers a comprehensive range of services to support our students' academic, emotional, and social development. These include guest speakers, life skills education, physical education, volunteering, and regular field trips to engage students in the greater Madison community. Our small class sizes and personalized attention allow students to thrive academically, while our counseling services and support groups help them maintain their recovery and mental health. We also provide opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities, ensuring they develop into well-rounded community members. Our commitment to a holistic approach has proven successful, with many of our graduates going on to lead fulfilling lives.

The Need for More Recovery Schools in Wisconsin

Wisconsin faces a significant challenge in addressing substance use disorders among young people. The need for more recovery schools is crucial to provide a safe and supportive environment for those in recovery and at risk. Horizon High School has been at the forefront of this effort, advocating for state funding to support the creation of new and existing recovery schools. We believe that by providing more recovery schools, we can significantly reduce the opioid epidemic and support the well-being of young people across the state.
