Accept a Natural Challenge

The Pennsylvania Envirothon is a rigorous and rewarding environmental education program designed to engage high school students in the complexities of natural resource management. Driven by a dedicated network of teachers, professionals, and volunteers across the state, Envirothon combines the excitement of friendly competition with hands-on learning experiences, ultimately fostering environmental stewardship and awareness among the next generation.

For over three decades, Envirothon has served as a platform for students to explore crucial environmental issues and delve into the intricate workings of ecosystems. Teams of five high school students dedicate their time and energy to mastering five distinct topic areas: Soils and Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife, and Environmental Issues. This multifaceted approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness within the natural world.

Unique Competitive Format

The heart of the Pennsylvania Envirothon lies in its engaging competitive format. Each year, Envirothon teams embark on a journey of knowledge acquisition, guided by mentors and experts in their respective fields. Teams are tested on their understanding of the five core subject areas through field tests held at a designated camp location. These field tests require students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, demonstrating their ability to analyze, interpret, and solve environmental challenges.

Adding another layer of complexity, the "hot topic" of the year, a current environmental issue, takes center stage. Students delve deep into this timely topic, researching its implications, potential solutions, and future impacts. This current issue becomes the focus of an oral presentation, challenging teams to communicate their research clearly and concisely to a panel of judges.

Cultivating Stewardship and Leadership

The Pennsylvania Envirothon is not merely an academic exercise; it is a transformative experience. Through their engagement with the program, students develop critical thinking skills, communication abilities, and a profound respect for the environment.

Envirothon instills a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection and inspires students to become active citizens, advocates, and future leaders in the field of natural resource management.
