Empowering musicians through exceptional education and inspiration
Dr. Carolyn M. Barrett, the esteemed director of the Suzuki Music Studio in Reston, Virginia, is a seasoned educator with a rich background in both traditional and Suzuki instruction. With over three decades of teaching experience, she has garnered international recognition for her exceptional work in the field of music education. Dr. Barrett has founded Suzuki method studios in various locations worldwide, including Lagos, Nigeria, Seoul, Korea, and her current base in Reston, Virginia.
In Seoul, Dr. Barrett's studio was directly supervised by the legendary Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. She was fortunate to have traveled to Matsumoto, Japan on three separate occasions to study under his tutelage. In 2020, with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Barrett seamlessly transitioned her lessons online, utilizing platforms such as Zoom and Facetime to maintain the continuity of her teaching. This successful adaptation has led her to offer both in-person and online lessons to new students on a case-by-case basis.
Dr. Barrett provides instruction for violin, viola, cello, and piano, catering to students aged three and above. The Reston studio presents an average of four recitals and performances a year in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Under her guidance, students have had the privilege of performing as soloists with the Washington Symphony, participating in concerts at the Kennedy Center, and gracing the stages of Presidents Park, Wolf Trap, and Constitution Hall.
The Suzuki Method
The Suzuki method, pioneered by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, is an immersive approach to learning music. The core belief of this method is that every child has the potential to learn and master an instrument in the same way they learn their native language-through listening, repetition, and positive reinforcement.
Dr. Barrett, a firm believer in the Suzuki method, implements it alongside traditional teaching strategies. This holistic approach fosters an enriching learning environment, empowering students to develop their technical skills while nurturing their love for music.
The Parents' Role
The Suzuki method emphasizes the role of parents in their child's musical journey. Parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child's lessons, aiding them in practicing at home. This collaboration establishes a solid foundation for the child's musical growth, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the art form.
