National Surf Schools-Instructors Association

The National Surf/SUP Schools & Instructors Association (NSSIA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering surf etiquette, water safety, and quality surfing. Established in 2005, we are the "only" professional Surf Instructor, SUP Instructor, and Surf Coaching Certification that implements the ISO Professional Certification Organization standard. Our mission is to protect both the industry and students by providing expert training and certification programs for surf schools, surfing instructors, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) instructors, and surf coaches.

Services Offered

NSSIA offers a range of services including Certified Stand-up Paddle (SUP) Instructor/Coach Certification, Instructor Upgrades & initial applications, Surf School Accreditation, and Surf School & Surfer Code of Ethics. We also provide Water Safety Accredited Surf Schools and Certified Surfing Instructors. Our programs are recognized and accepted by the legal and insurance communities, colleges, and high schools throughout the US, as well as in the professional ranks. For those looking to become serious professionals in the surfing industry, our services are designed to take you beyond simply teaching.

Certification Programs

We offer various certification programs, including SUP and or Surf Team coaching certification training. These programs are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the surfing industry. Additionally, we have a new certification program for surf dog trainers and judges. Our programs are available online and at our Chesapeake Beach, Maryland headquarters. Annual renewals are due by January 1st each year, and late payments may result in your name and school being moved to our inactive list.

Manual and Resources

Our comprehensive manual covers surf instruction, SUP instruction, coaching, business issues, conditioning and nutrition, injuries, history, and even a section on training surf dogs. The manual is available online and is only available in English. However, for foreign instructors and coaches who don't read English, we can provide relevant sections interpreted in Spanish.
