Our History

Our story began in 1906 when our founding father, George Roderer, started selling footwear from his home on Xenia Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. George, born in Fichtelberg, Germany, learned the art of shoemaking as an apprentice to the village shoemaker before immigrating to the United States with his widowed mother and three siblings in 1892. After working as a toolmaker at the National Cash Register Company, George pursued his passion for shoes, repairing the shoes of his fellow factory workers and eventually starting his own business.

In 1913, George constructed a new home and store two blocks west of his original location, marking the beginning of Roderer Shoes as we know it today. His older brother, John B. Roderer, also opened a shoe store, J.B. Roderer Shoes, in the original location. The brothers were affectionately known as "Big Roderer" and "Little Roderer" by the community.

Both brothers had large families, with George and his wife, Rosina, raising nine children, including five sons who followed in their father's footsteps. One of George's sons later left retailing to become a Chiropodist, the profession we know today as Podiatry. John's family was equally involved in the business, with his children contributing to the success of J.B. Roderer Shoes.
