Our History

Our office has a rich and storied history that dates back to the early days of the American West. The land on which our office is built was once owned by Seth Bullock, a legendary figure of the Wild West who served as a sheriff in Deadwood and later became the governor of South Dakota. In 1889, Bullock sold the land to the Cade & Overpeck Land and Abstract Company, which specialized in helping homesteaders "prove up" their claims during the early 1900s.

In 1903, a photograph was taken of the founders of the Cade & Overpeck Land and Abstract Company in this very office building. The safe behind them remains in the front of our office building to this day. The VVV Ranch, which gained notoriety when Henry Longabaugh (also known as The Sundance Kid) stole a horse from the ranch in 1887, took a photograph of their cowboys in front of this office in 1906.

Dan McCutchen started practicing law in this building in 1908, and a law firm has been in this building ever since. Today, we continue to honor the legacy of those who came before us by providing high-quality legal services to the people of the Northern Black Hills.
