Established in 1997, The Music Box has provided thousands of former and current student musicians with an opportunity to reach their goals. With excellent, college-educated teachers, and a warm, comfortable environment, students can expand their musical horizons. Located in rural Poughquag, New York, The Music Box offers excellent music instruction for people throughout Dutchess County, Putnam County, and even Connecticut.

Our Story

The Music Box was established in January of 1997. Being a family-run business, we have been able to keep our small-town nature and personalized service. We are committed to providing the highest quality instruction while keeping lessons enjoyable and fun. Great care is taken in matching each student's needs to the teacher and selecting the best possible lesson days and times to meet each family's needs.

We teach almost all instruments and voice for almost all ages and abilities and all music styles. Students are taught to read and write music as well as play. Students also learn performance technique, music theory, artistry, articulation, and phrasing at their ability level.

Our Instructors

Teachers at The Music Box are professionally trained musicians. Most have a college degree in music education, performance, or music therapy. All teachers teach music reading and writing and can teach to the level of conservatory or college preparation on their primary instrument.

Learning is Fun

We are committed to keeping music fun. Music is one of the most challenging skills to master. Not only are reading music, skills, and proper techniques necessary, but they must be performed in an exact time and performed with expression! Students generally want to put the time into things that they enjoy. Although when things get difficult, the teacher will try to differentiate frustration from lack of interest. Teachers continually assess the student's progress and preference for songs and styles of music. For this reason, they will often suggest new books. It is important to keep lines of communication open for these reasons, among others. Teachers will often use incentives like stickers and prizes for satisfactory progress, but family interest and pride are excellent motivators.

What We Offer

We provide individual instruction on almost all instruments for all ages, abilities, and styles. The Music Box also includes a store with lesson books, accessories, print music, etc. Music can be special ordered for NYSSMA and other occasions. We rent and sell instruments through K & S Music, Inc. Group instruction and masterclasses are offered periodically. Some of our upcoming classes include: Pop singing technique, Ukulele class, Guitar ensemble, Songwriting workshops. Our students can perform in our yearly recital and participate in other community opportunities.
