Our History

The Hardwood Shop, founded over 30 years ago by Mike Rahberger and his family, has a rich history rooted in both farming and craftsmanship. Before dedicating themselves to creating exquisite custom furniture and cabinetry, the Rahbergers owned and operated a successful 50-cow dairy farm just southeast of Monroe, Wisconsin, from 1970 to 1986. It was during this time that Mike developed a deep appreciation for quality craftsmanship and a desire to create lasting, beautiful pieces.

In 1986, the family embarked on a new venture, opening The Hardwood Shop and bringing Mike's vision to life. Mike, a self-taught woodworker, possesses a unique mastery of traditional techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail construction, and other time-honored methods that ensure the longevity and beauty of every piece. He rejects shortcuts, believing that true quality only comes from meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to time-tested craftsmanship.
