Our Journey

The story of The Jasper Company began in 1983 when Don Beans first arrived in Ely, Minnesota. Drawn to the allure of the Northwoods, he quickly immersed himself in the local outdoor industry, gaining invaluable experience working at various outfitters and resorts. It was during this time that he met Joan, the love of his life, on Jasper Lake, under the shadow of the soaring pines and beside the sparkling waters.

In 1988, Don's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own freelance guide business, a testament to his deep-seated passion for sharing the wonders of this wild and wondrous landscape. Don's expertise in guiding fishing trips, particularly for trophy smallmouth bass, quickly gained recognition.

Over the years, The Jasper Company expanded its services and offerings. Don and Joan, along with their daughter Cindy, poured their heart and soul into creating a unique and welcoming experience for guests. The family purchased the property where their beloved Bay House now stands, a testament to Don's masterful woodworking skills, evident throughout the house's warm and inviting interior.

The Guest House, the first vacation rental, opened its doors in 2010, followed by the acquisition of a charming inn in Ely, known as Stay Inn Ely. In 2016, the Jasper Company Bake Shop transformed into Northern Grounds, a cozy cafe serving delicious homemade treats and locally roasted coffee. And in 2022, The Lake House, a spacious and stunning retreat, joined the growing family of The Jasper Company properties, ready to welcome new guests.
