History

Sloan's Antiques has been a cherished fixture on Buffalo's East Side for over six decades, its doors first opening in 1955 at 729 William St. Founded by Sol and Gertrude Sloan, the store began as a humble operation, reflecting their journey as Polish Jewish immigrants seeking to rebuild their lives in a new land. Initially a small junk store, Sloan's evolved over the years, housing everything from sporting goods to modern furniture, constantly adapting to the needs of its community.

Outgrowing their original location, the Sloans seized an opportunity when the former Wolff's Furniture Store across the street became available. This grand four-story building, now a beloved landmark, quickly filled with a diverse collection of antiques, home goods, and architectural salvage, cementing Sloan's reputation as a one-stop destination for unique treasures.

A Legacy of Resilience and Enterprise

Sol and Gertrude's story is one of remarkable resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. They endured immeasurable hardship as refugees of the Holocaust, losing loved ones and their entire world in the chaos and brutality of World War II. Arriving in Buffalo with almost nothing but the clothes on their backs and two young children, they faced uncertainty and discrimination.

Undeterred, Sol's innate drive to build a life for his family led him to turn his talents to peddling goods he salvaged. He was not just selling objects; he was selling hope, a testament to the human spirit's ability to survive and thrive even in the face of unimaginable loss. His hard work, combined with Gertrude's unwavering support, allowed them to fulfill their American dream.

Max Sloan and the Continuation of a Legacy

Since 1976, Sloan's Antiques has been passed down to the next generation, skillfully guided by Sol and Gertrude's son, Max. He has carried on his parents' legacy by maintaining the store's unwavering commitment to quality, authenticity, and customer service. Max's passion for antiques is evident in the carefully curated collection within the store's walls, each piece telling a story waiting to be discovered.
