Dr. Julie Vasile, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has been performing surgery since 1999. In 2008, she completed an advanced course in breast reconstruction and has been providing the innovative perforator flap procedure ever since. Dr. Vasile has dedicated her practice to only natural breast reconstructions, focusing on the use of a patient's own tissue to rebuild their breasts. Advanced Treatment Options

Over the years, Dr. Vasile has helped pioneer advanced surgical techniques, such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of flaps and advanced types of stacked flap breast reconstruction, that allow more women to experience the benefits of natural breast reconstruction. Natural Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Vasile specializes in perforator flap breast reconstruction, a technique which uses your own fat and skin tissue to create a breast without harming the muscle. The tissue can be transferred from many donor sites on the body, but the abdomen is the most common source of tissue. While the most common form of natural breast reconstruction uses tissue from the abdomen, there are continuous advancements in knowledge resulting in more areas of fatty tissue that a breast can be reconstructed from.

Advancements in Perforator Flap Reconstruction

The most useful recent advance in perforator flap reconstruction is stacked flaps, also called double flaps, to make one breast. Dr. Vasile has tremendous and successful experience with stacked DIEP flaps for reconstruction of one breast to match the other breast. The newest advance in stacked flaps is using double flaps to make two breasts or four flap breast reconstruction. An extended DIEP flap or four flap procedure uses the standard DIEP flap along with the fat on the sides of the abdomen (DCIP flap). It allows the creation of two breasts using the abdominal fat and sides of the abdomen to meet reconstruction volume and tissue requirements.

Successful Outcomes

From 2009 to 2010, Dr. Vasile had a 0% fail rate for her procedures in the breast program at Stamford Hospital. From 2011 to 2018, she has about a 0.5% fail rate in the breast reconstruction program at Northern Westchester Hospital. Research and Innovation

Dr. Vasile is considered a world authority on using MRA imaging for perforator flap breast reconstruction. Her research created protocols for using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to accurately map out the small vessels in the tissue (abdomen, buttock, thigh, and lateral thorax), thus identifying the best vessel and site to use for microsurgical breast reconstruction. She started the MRA perforator flap program that accurately and simultaneously identifies the vessels in the tissue, allowing for more precise and effective reconstructive procedures.
