Sharing the love of books and reading with all of Maui

Who we are

The Maui Friends of the Library is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to fostering a vibrant literary culture on the island of Maui. Established in 1912, we have a long and rich history of serving the community through our three bustling used bookstores and various initiatives.

Our History

From humble beginnings in 1912, the Maui Friends of the Library have consistently supported the island's libraries. In the early days, our volunteers funded the library in Wailuku and actively campaigned for the establishment of additional libraries across the island. Throughout the decades, we have tirelessly raised funds to enhance library resources, support outreach programs, and champion literacy initiatives.

Our Mission

Our mission remains steadfast: to support and strengthen Maui's public libraries. We achieve this by:

  • Enhancing library resources: Funding the acquisition of new books, audiobooks, and digital media.
  • Boosting community engagement: Organizing book sales, author events, and literacy programs.
  • Connecting readers: Providing volunteers for library programs and events.
  • Promoting literacy: Awarding scholarships to Maui students and supporting literacy initiatives.
  • Preserving Maui's literary heritage: Partnering with the library to acquire and digitize historical books and documents.

What we do (and have done!)

Over the years, the Maui Friends of the Library have:

  • Supported the acquisition of over 100,000 books and other materials.
  • Provided over $1 million in scholarships and grants to Maui students.
  • Organized countless book sales and fundraising events, raising vital funds for library programs and resources.
  • Launched the popular Holoholo Bookmobile, delivering books to homebound residents and those in remote areas.

Our Values

Our work is guided by the following values:

  • Community: We are committed to fostering a strong and vibrant community through literacy and access to information.
  • Integrity: We operate with transparency and accountability in all our endeavors.
  • Sustainability: We strive to make a lasting impact through our ongoing programs and initiatives.
  • Passion: We are fueled by a deep love for books, reading, and the power of libraries.
